WorldArts December Featured Artist: The Milky Way

The Milky Way is a hip-hop, Afrofuturist band consisting of Sum, Sno Leopard (Vocabutrois & Lil Mis), Mat Mega (bass/sound fx), Sir Ian Dangerous (keyboards/vocals), Taurus Hamilton (lead guitar). Just like much new music of this generation they are inspired by many genres: funk, electronic soul, world rhythms, ska, tribal music, classic rock, punk or simply sounds they encounter and feel in the moment. However, what makes The Milky Way stand out is their experimental approach to their hip-hop sound.

In a press release, The Milky Way said, “we are students of new music AND the great musical legacy that precedes us. It all comes together in a milky way.” Because the group is inspired by so many genres, they provide music fans with a new spin on hip-hop music, something a little bit more dance-able that also makes you wanna fist pump.

30179161861_c933384762_oEarlier this year we caught a live performance by the band at our A3C “VJC Reunion” in Atlanta where we first witnessed their progressive hip-hop sound. They may not be widely known now, but the group has an explosive energy when it comes to live performances and infectious catchy beats that can’t help but make the audience groove along.

Their fourteen track compilation, Vapor Trails, is now available on iTunes, CD Baby and Spotify. Currently, the band has announced that they will be heading into the studio over the weekend to record their first official EP, “In2TheSuperfantastique.” No word on a release date yet, but hopefully the band will have some exciting announcements in the new year! Be sure to check out their current body of work below and follow them on social media to stay in the loop!
