Earlier this year Jhené Aiko had released a joint project with Big Sean, TWENTY88. Now the young soulstress is back with her latest solo project “Maniac” hinting a follow up record to her 2014 debut album Souled Out. For her latest project Jhené worked with Steven Taylor, an established director and photographer, familiar with shibari, a Japanese art form that inspired Jhené for her “Maniac” artwork that would be released in tandem with the single.
“Steven’s direction was such a big help because he really brought some cool ideas to the table and the reason why I called it an art project is because the pictures and the statement is just as important as the song. It’s not just, oh, I’m releasing a single. We captured this moment that I feel like me and Steven came together and really created. ” – Jhene Aiko in a Billboard interview
The sensual track shows off Jhené’s wild side, or maniac tendencies, which she also admitted in the Billboard interview. The Maniac art project demonstrates the shibari art form that involves pleasure and pain of an individual when being tied up by rope. You can view the project in its entirety online www.jheneisamaniac.com featuring photos and gifs Jhené Aiko and Steven Taylor created.
There hasn’t been any announcements on exactly when Jhené’s next solo album will be out in it’s entirety, but Big Sean took to twitter saying, “Thank you the next @Twenty88 album is coming through next year. We gon get our solo’s off too though!” So it looks like things in 2017 will be a big year for both the TWENTY88 artists.
If you were lucky enough to snatch tickets to her Los Angeles show, she will be playing the Avalon, Monday, November 21 for 30 days in LA by Red Bull Sound Select.
