Next year’s FYF Fest will be moving up to July 22 & 23, instead of taking place the second to last weekend of August. There’s many reasons this could be happening, but a huge factor could be that it’ll be the peak of summer festival season, potentially making it easier to book more in demand music acts that may already be doing a summer festival run. Festival organizers have been asking fans to submit bands they’d like to see on the 2017 bill, so maybe they’re planning their biggest festival yet.
In 2004, FYF Fest was once an intimate indie punk band festival started by Sean Carlson held at The Echo catering to the SoCal hipsters of Echo Park and Silverlake. With success comes growth making it necessary for FYF Fest to eventually land at Exposition Park. Although the event space is quite spread out allowing the festival to add more stages and therefore expanding their music line-up and accommodations for ticket holders.
Although FYF Fest started out with punk bands primarily filling their bill, they’ve stayed true to their original sound but managed to successfully diversify and expand; something Beach Goth and other emerging festivals should take notes on.
Over the years the punk bands began retreating to the smaller stages making room for the more mainstream headliners and festival staples like Kendrick Lamar, Kanye West, Purity Ring, Chet Faker, Flume and Run the Jewels.
Who knows exactly what FYF Fest is plotting for 2017, but we can only hope for bigger and better things!
