Family Thief On New Music and Performing at the Troubadour

Malcolm Williams, also known by his stage name Family Thief, is an acoustic singer-songwriter from Southern California. Williams started out making music in his bedroom and has slowly made his dreams a reality, playing more local shows and captivating intimate audiences. Lately he’s been working on the next Family Thief concept project called, 2 AM which he plans to release next year.

We recently got to chat with Family Thief about his current projects and how he’s excited to be supporting Lydia and Elder Brother at the Troubadour on December 1. Check out our interview with him below:

WorldArts: How did you get started in music?

Malcolm Williams: I got started in high school, playing in few bands after years playing house shows and open mics. I did a month as a Merch guy for forever came calling’s US tour. Every night playing for kids in the parking lot. That tour really pushed me to pursue music.

WorldArts: What does it feel like to have a show coming at the Troubadour with Lydia?

MW: The show with Lydia and Elder Brother is a dream come true, I’m actually a huge fan of Elder Brother and Lydia. Dan of Elder Brother’s song writing is amazing. I’ve seen all my favorite bands play at the Troubadour and to be on that same stage years later, it’s unreal to me. I truly couldn’t be more blessed for this opportunity, I thank God for a praying mother. I wouldn’t be here without her or the family I’ve created through my music.

WorldArts: Tell us about (and the inspiration behind) your latest video ‘King of the Floor’?

MW: King of the Floor was inspired by Groundhog Day (the movie) and a really bad break up, haha. My buddy Jeremy Sazon and his team crushed it with the filming and editing. It was a lot fun.

WorldArts: What’s coming next for Family Thief?

MW: I’m sitting on a really awesome project right now called 2 AM, shooting for a loose concept record. I plan to support the release with heavy touring in 2017.

If you’re in the Los Angeles area be sure to check out his show at the Troubadour, December 1, in support of Lydia and Elder Brother. You can purchase tickets for the show here.
