SHARE

Pop/soul singer-songwriter emaé has released Better, the first single from her highly anticipated debut album set to drop later this year! The Aberdeen, Scotland native (now based in London) displays an uplifting mix of soul-pop with folk and gospel undertones on this intensely personal track.  Written and composed by emaé (pronounced em-may), Better showcases her honest, life-weathered songwriting with a preview of the raw, emotive vocals fans will hear on her upcoming album. “Better is the song for right now, it 100% reflects where I’ve been the last year and also where I’m going” she says. “It’s a song of resilience, confidence and certainty. It’s a song I’m extremely proud of.”

emaé has been featured on Afropunk, MTV The Wrap Up, and was recently hand-picked as ‘One to Watch in 2017’ by the MOBO Awards. Her 2015 debut single ‘Something Beautiful’ received mass critical acclaim. MTV The Wrap Up said the track ‘oozes confidence, honesty and a relatability that is rare for newcomers’, and Soulbounce USA noted its ‘luscious vocals and sweet harmonies’. To accompany the song, emaé released a cinematic music video, which was directed by Lee Jones (Jessie J, Tinie Tempah, Rita Ora), shot by Sam Pearce (Kate Nash, Rizzle Kicks), and was featured on VEVO’s front page.

In 2016, she unveiled her acoustic EP Imperfect Words (premiered by Afropunk) and a second single Know You. With support from BBC 6 Music, the releases led to an opportunity to open for US artist Adia Victoria in the UK. She was nominated by Gospel Touch Music for the 2016 Critics Choice Awards, and was a finalist for the #roadtothe100club ‘Best Original Acts’ in the UK in conjunction with PRS Music and Island Records. She also wrote and performed the soundtrack for motion picture The Sunrise StoryTeller from teen Canadian filmmaker Kasha Slavner, which premiered at the United Nations in March 2017.

Better was mixed and mastered by Mark Allaway (Newton Faulkner, Jess Glynn) and Alex Balzama, and the video was shot and edited by Joe Almond (Sofar Sounds).  Watch it now and download the song on iTunes today!
